Trek Overview
Nicknamed the Whiskey Route, the Machame Route is the most popular Kilimanjaro climbing path, chosen by nearly half of all trekkers each year. This scenic route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, ascending the breathtaking southern slopes before descending via the Mweka Route. Along the way, climbers are rewarded with some of Kilimanjaro’s most stunning sunrises and sunsets.
Over seven days, you’ll journey through lush rainforest, open moorlands, and high alpine desert, eventually standing atop Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa.

7 Days Rongai Route FAQs
Is the Rongai Route less crowded than other Kilimanjaro routes?
Ye, the Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is known for being much quieter and less trafficked than popular routes like Machame or Marangu, offering a more peaceful trekking experience.
How difficult is the 7 Days Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route is considered moderate in difficulty, with a gradual ascent profile that helps with acclimatization. It’s a good choice for those who want a balance between physical challenge and a higher chance of success.
What is the success rate on the 7 Days Rongai Route?
The 7-day itinerary improves acclimatization and results in a summit success rate of around 85% or higher, especially compared to shorter versions of the same route.
What are the accommodations like on the Rongai Route?
You’ll stay in high-quality mountain tents set up and maintained by our professional crew. On the descent (via Marangu), you’ll sleep in Horombo Hut, a warm and sheltered resting point. We also include a private toilet tent for added comfort.
What’s the scenery like compared to other routes?
The Rongai Route offers diverse and unique landscapes, including remote wilderness, forested slopes, and striking views of Mawenzi Peak. The descent via the Marangu route provides a change of scenery, passing through lush rainforest.
Is this route better during the rainy season?
Yes. The northern side of Kilimanjaro receives less rain, making Rongai a smart choice if you’re climbing between March–May or November. It’s also a reliable option for year-round treks with fewer weather disruptions.
Are meals and water provided?
Yes. We serve fresh, hot meals prepared by our mountain chefs three times a day. We also provide safe, filtered drinking water throughout the climb. We cater to special diets on request—just let us know in advance.
What kind of support team will I have?
You’ll be accompanied by a full support crew: experienced guides, porters, and cooks, all trained and certified. Our team ensures your safety and comfort from start to finish—your success is our mission.
What is summit night like?
Summit night is the most challenging but also the most inspiring. We leave Kibo Hut around midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak by sunrise. Our guides will walk with you step by step, offering support and motivation all the way.
Can I combine this climb with a Tanzania safari?
Yes, and it’s highly recommended! At Asili Climbing Kilimanjaro, we offer custom safari extensions after your trek. Explore Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or relax in Zanzibar—whatever suits your travel dream.
