Trek Overview
The Marangu Route, often nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro trail that offers hut accommodations instead of camping. With its well-trodden path and extra comfort, it’s a popular choice for trekkers seeking a scenic yet straightforward climb to the summit of Africa’s highest peak.
This 6-day version allows more time for acclimatization than the 5-day trek, which increases your summit success rate. You’ll travel through distinct vegetation zones, from rainforest to alpine desert, finishing with a midnight push to Uhuru Peak via Gilman’s Point.

Have questions about climbing Kilimanjaro with us?
Take a look at our FAQs below for helpful insights. If you don’t find the answer you need, feel free to get in touch—our Kilimanjaro experts are ready to help you plan every step of your unforgettable adventure.
How many days does the Marangu Route take to complete?
The standard itinerary takes 5 or 6 days, with the 6-day version being strongly recommended. The extra day allows for better acclimatization, improving your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak.
Is the Marangu Route the easiest way up Mount Kilimanjaro?
It’s often marketed as the “easiest” route due to its gradual slopes and hut accommodations—but don’t be fooled. The shorter acclimatization time makes it less forgiving when it comes to altitude sickness, so preparation is key.
Why is Marangu called the "Coca-Cola Route"?
Because it’s the only route on Kilimanjaro where you sleep in permanent huts instead of tents—and Coca-Cola used to be sold at some of the resting points. It’s a nickname that reflects the relative comfort compared to camping routes.
What is the distance and elevation gain of the Marangu Route?
The route covers approximately 72 km (45 miles) round trip. The elevation gain is about 4,005 meters (13,140 feet) from Marangu Gate (1,860m) to the summit (5,895m), then you descend on the same trail.
What kind of accommodation is available on the Marangu Route?
You’ll sleep in shared A-frame huts with bunk beds. Each hut has dorm-style rooms, solar lighting, and basic communal washrooms. It’s a good option if you prefer not to camp outdoors.
How crowded is the Marangu Route?
It is one of the most popular routes, especially among budget-conscious trekkers. Because it uses the same trail for ascent and descent, you’ll often encounter other groups heading in both directions.
What is the success rate for Marangu Route climbs?
Success rates for the 5-day itinerary are relatively low due to poor acclimatization. However, the 6-day version sees much better success, especially if you take it slow and hydrate well.
When is the best time to climb the Marangu Route?
The best months are January to early March and June to October, when weather conditions are more stable and the trails are dry. However, Marangu’s hut system makes it a feasible option even in the rainy seasons.
What should I bring for a Marangu Route trek?
Layered clothing for all temperature ranges, a 4-season sleeping bag, warm hat and gloves, trekking poles, personal toiletries, and a headlamp are essential. You’ll also need a small daypack while porters carry your main bag.
Who is the Marangu Route best suited for?
The Marangu Route is great for first-time trekkers who prefer the comfort of huts, are traveling in the rainy season, or want a shorter route with fewer logistics. It’s not ideal for those seeking solitude or remote wilderness experiences.
